Miles Malleson’s Yours Unfaithfully Tickets

Miles Malleson’s Yours Unfaithfully, an “un-Romantic Comedy,” tells the story of a married couple who explore an open marriage in 1930s England.

The play was published in 1933 in England, but has never been produced. The current off-Broadway production will be the world premiere of the play, 83 years after it was written!

The play tells the story of Stephen, a “writer who isn’t writing,” and his wife Anne. When Stephen begins to sink into depression and moodiness, Anne suggests a “fresh spark” to pull him from his funk. Yours Unfaithfully explores the impact of that decision, as well as the themes of marriage, generosity, sacrifice, and love.

While Yours Unfaithfully has never been produced, it did receive some reviews upon its publication in 1933. Famed philosopher and Nobel Prize winner Bertrand Russell wrote of the play:

[Yours Unfaithfully is] the best play that Mr. Malleson has hitherto produced, both because it is well constructed and moves with great sureness, and also because it is quite free from all taint of propaganda… The subject is treated delightfully, with humor and kindliness and without any dogmatic conclusion. The characters behave as real people do behave, and not according to some convention of the theatre.

The Observer called the play “vivacious and intelligent.”
