The Humans is the poignant tale of a middle class family struggling to get by in the modern age. The play, which was written by Stephen Karam, was performed by the Roundabout Theater Company at the Laura Pels Theater through January 3 before it moved to the Helen Hayes Theatre on Broadway on February 18. The play was directed by Joe Mantello. It is set in a New York City duplex on Thanksgiving as a family gathers to share a meal, reconnect, and support each other. The play utilizes a two-tier set connected by a spiral staircase that was designed by David Zinn. Karam’s Sons of the Prophet, which was also performed at the Pels Theater, was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize.
“All the actors in The Humans are at their best… Mr. Mantello orchestrates the complicated action and shifting emotional currents with admirable dexterity; this may be his finest work in an already distinguished career.” - Charles Isherwood, The New York Times
