The Humans Tickets
The Humans is the poignant tale of a middle class family struggling to get by in the modern age. The play, which was written by Stephen Karam, was performed by the Roundabout Theater Company at the Laura Pels Theater through January 3 before it moved to the Helen Hayes Theatre on Broadway on February 18. The play was directed by Joe Mantello. It is set in a New York City duplex on Thanksgiving as a family gathers to share a meal, reconnect, and support each other. The play utilizes a two-tier set connected by a spiral staircase that was designed by David Zinn. Karam’s Sons of the Prophet, which was also performed at the Pels Theater, was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize.

Brigid Blake and her boyfriend, Rich, host dinner at their new apartment in Chinatown. Brigid’s family come to visit for the holiday. Brigid is an aspiring composer who is buried in student loan debt and tends bar to make ends meet. Rich is going to school to become a social worker and expects to inherit a trust fund in two years. Brigid’s parents, Erik and Deirdre, have been working at the same jobs for decades and are struggling to make ends meet as they also care for Erik’s mother, Momo, who has dementia and is in a wheelchair. They cannot afford to hire someone to help care for her. Brigid’s sister, Aimee, recently broke up with her girlfriend and believes she is going to lose her job.
The Humans is a story about a family facing a variety of problems, but it is also about the ways all people are affected by fate and circumstance. The play centers on the fragility of human life and is a touching portrait of one family’s struggles.
