War Paint is heading to Broadway this season with two-time Tony winners Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole. Inspired by Lindy Woodhead’s book and Anne Carol Grossman and Arnie Reisman’s documentary film, The Power & the Glory, this play follows cosmetic trailblazers during the first half of the 20th century.
In the musical, the characters Helena Rubinstein (LuPone) and Elizabeth Arden (Ebersole) follow their dream of being innovators in the cosmetics industry. Becoming the country’s first major female entrepreneurs, they helped give birth to an industry that changed the fact of America. Both women built international empires in a world dominated by men as they focused on the cosmetics industry.
Ebersole won Tonys for her performance as Edith Beale and Little Edie in Grey Gardens and for her role in 42nd Street in 2001. LuPone was most recently seen in Shows for Days and has won Tonys in Evita and Gypsy along with Sweeney Todd.
Choreography for the musical is by Christopher Gattelli, and scenic design is by David Korins. Costume design is done by Catherine Zuber while lighting design is by Kenneth Posner. Sound design is done by Brian Ronan, and orchestrations are by Bruce Coughlin with music direction by Lawrence Yurman. The musical will begin previews at the Nederlander Theatre on March 7, and then opening night is scheduled for April 6.
