The Manhattan Theatre Club will be producing a revival of The Little Foxes by Lillian Hellman in 2017. The play will star three-time Tony Award nominee Laura Linney and Tony Award winner Cynthia Nixon.

The two actresses will appear in every performance, but they will alternate playing the lead roles of Regina and Birdie. This will be the first time in the Manhattan Theatre Club’s history that two performers will alternate playing the lead roles. The play will begin previews on March 29 at the Samuel. J. Friedman Theatre and will officially open on April 19.

A Ruthless Family Makes a Deal

The Little Foxes is set in Alabama in 1900. It tells the story of Regina Hubbard Giddens and her ruthless family, including her sister-in-law Birdie, and their fight to strike a deal, even if they hurt others to get ahead.

The play begins with the three Hubbard siblings – Benjamin, Oscar, and Regina – wrapping up a deal with a businessman from Chicago. A cotton mill will be opened in exchange for cheap labor. The three siblings from an aristocratic family each stand to make millions of dollars from the venture.

Benjamin is apathetic, Oscar is obsessed with power, and Regina, who did not receive an inheritance from her father, wants to get her share of the profits. She needs money from her husband, who is in poor health. The Hubbards seek to make money at the expense of the town and the people who live there. The play explores several themes that are relevant today, including racism, income inequality, abuse, and apathy.

Previous Collaborations

The play will be directed by Tony Award winner Daniel Sullivan. He directed Linney in Sight Unseen and Time Stands Still, for which she was nominated for two Tony Awards. He also directed Nixon in Rabbit Hole, for which she won a Tony.
