The Glass Menagerie will be returning to Broadway four years after its most recent revival. The play is based on Tennessee Williams’ classic 1944 family drama.

The new production will star two-time Academy Award winner Sally Field in the role of Amanda Wingfield. It will also star actor and director Joe Mantello as Tom Wingfield, Amanda’s son. Newcomer Madison Ferris will play the role of Laura, Amanda Wingfield’s daughter who is confined to a wheelchair and is protected by her mother. Finn Wittrock will play the role of the Gentleman Caller.

A Family Struggling to Survive

Amanda used to be a Southern belle, but she was abandoned by her husband, Tom and Laura’s father, and left to struggle to support the family on her own. Like many other famous female characters created by Tennessee Williams, Amanda tries to hold on to memories of a past when she was happy as she struggles to survive in an unpleasant present. Amanda dreams of starting a new romance, but her hopes are dashed.

Previous and Upcoming Productions of The Glass Menagerie

The most recent revival of the Glass Menagerie in the United States began in 2013 at the American Repertory Theater. Cast members Cherry Jones, Brian J. Smith, and Celia Keenan-Bolger all earned Tony Award nominations.

The Broadway production is scheduled to begin previews on February 7, 2017 at the Belasco Theatre and will officially open on March 9. The play will be directed by Sam Gold, who also directed a production at Toneelgroep Amsterdam in 2015 with a different cast. Scott Rudin is the lead producer on the upcoming Broadway production.
