Miss Saigon will return to the theater where it began its original run in 1991. Previews are scheduled to begin on March 1, 2017 at the Broadway Theatre, and the official opening is set for March 23. The play is scheduled to run through January 2018 on Broadway before going on a North American tour.
Miss Saigon is the story of a romance between an American soldier and a Vietnamese woman. Most of the story takes place in Saigon when it was occupied by the United States military in 1975.
Previous Productions of Miss Saigon
Miss Saigon made its debut in London in 1989. It featured music by Claude-Michel Schonberg and lyrics written by Alain Boublil and Richard Maltby Jr. The musical opened on Broadway in 1991 and ran for nearly 10 years. Miss Saigon was nominated for 11 Tony Awards and won three prizes. A revival opened in London in 2014 and featured changes to the book, a new song, and other changes. The musical has been performed in dozens of countries around the world.
The London production was so popular with theatergoers that it will be transferred to Broadway. The revival of Miss Saigon will star newcomer Eva Noblezada as Kim and Jon Jon Briones as the Engineer. Lea Salonga and Jonathan Pryce earned Tony Awards for their performances in those roles in the original production in 1991.
Cameron Mackintosh produced the original staging of Miss Saigon and will also produce the upcoming revival. Mackintosh produced Cats, Les Miserables, and The Phantom of the Opera in New York. The revival of Miss Saigon will be directed by Laurence Connor, who also directed Les Miserables, School of Rock, and a touring production of The Phantom of the Opera.
