Hello, Dolly! on Broadway

The classic 1964 musical Hello, Dolly! will be returning to Broadway starring Bette Midler in the role of matchmaker Dolly Levi. Previews will begin March 15, 2017 at the Shubert Theatre, and the show will officially open on April 20.

Cast and Creative Team for Hello, Dolly!

The book was written by Michael Stewart based on Thornton Wilder’s The Matchmaker. The score was written by Jerry Herman. Hello, Dolly! will be directed by four-time Tony Award winner Jerry Zaks and choreographed by Tony winner Warren Carlyle.

David Hyde Pierce will play the role of Horace Vandergelder. Tony Award nominee Kate Baldwin will take on the role of Irene Molloy. Two-time Tony nominee Gavin Creel will play Cornelius Hackl, and Jennifer Simard, who was nominated this year for a Tony for her performance in Disaster!, will appear in the musical as Ernestina. The cast also includes Taylor Trensch, Will Burton, and Melanie Moore.

The creative team will include Santo Loquasto as scenic and costume designer, Natasha Katz as lighting designer, Scott Lehrer as sound designer, Larry Hochman as orchestrator, and Don Pippin as vocal arranger. Andy Einhorn will serve as musical director, and Glen Kelly will do the dance arrangements.

History of the Musical

The title role was written for Ethel Merman but was originally played by Carol Channing, who won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. The role has been played by several other legendary actresses over the years.

Hello, Dolly! set a record in 1964, winning 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. It was briefly the longest-running musical in Broadway history, with 2,844 performances.
