Groundhog Day on Broadway

After earning positive reviews in London, the musical Groundhog Day will be coming to Broadway. The play is scheduled to begin previews on March 16, 2017 at the August Wilson Theatre and will officially open on April 17. That means it will be eligible to win 2017 Tony Awards.

Living the Same Day Again and Again

Groundhog Day is about Phil Connors, a TV weatherman from Pittsburgh who is sent to the small town of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to cover a Groundhog Day event. He finds himself stuck repeating the same day over and over until he gets it right. The musical is based on a 1993 film with the same title.

Cast and Creative Team

Andy Karl, who played Phil Connors in London, will reprise his role when Groundhog Day comes to Broadway. The rest of the cast members have not yet been announced. The musical will be directed by Matthew Warchus and choreographed by Peter Darling. The set and costumes will be designed by Rob Howell.

Groundhog Day has music and lyrics written by Tim Minchin, who also wrote songs for Matilda, and a book written by Danny Rubin, who co-wrote the script for the film version with Harold Ramis. The musical will be produced on Broadway by Whistle Pig and Columbia Live Stage.
