Come From Away tells the story of the small town of Gander, Newfoundland in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Airspace over the U.S. was closed for 6 days after 9/11, and so thousands of airline passengers on 38 planes were forced to be rerouted to the small Canadian town. The resulting influx of people doubled the town's population overnight, and Come From Away portrays not only the confusion of the passengers, but the local townspeople coming together to support them.
Come From Away premiered in La Jolla in 2015, and had another successful run in Seattle at same year. Productions in Washington, D.C. and Toronto followed in 2016. Come From Away will make its Broadway debut in March of 2017 at the Gerry Schoenfeld Theatre.
The book, music, and lyrics were written by Irene Sankoff & David Hein. The director is Christopher Ashley, with music direction by Ian Eisendrath, choreography by Kelly Devine, scenic design by Beowulf Boritt, costume design by Toni-Leslie James, lighting design by Howard Binkley, and sound design by Gareth Owen.
The cast includes Tony nominee Chad Kimball, Petrina Bromley, Geno Carr, Jenn Colella, Joel Hatch, Rodney Hicks, Kendra Kassebaum, Lee MacDougall, Caesar Samayoa, Q. Smith, Astrid Van Wieren, Sharon Wheatley, Josh Breckenridge, Susan Dunstan, Tamika Lawrence, and Tony LePage.
Musical numbers in Come From Away include "Welcome to the Rock," "38 Planes," "Stop the World," "Somewhere in the Middle of Nowhere," and "Something's Missing."
