NEWSical the Musical Tickets

Newsical the Musical is an off-Broadway hit that spoofs people and events making headlines, including politicians, celebrities, and anyone else that the public finds interesting. The songs and material are regularly updated to keep pace with changing events. Drama Desk nominee Rick Crom composes the music and pens the lyrics for this delightful musical that spoofs a wide array of contemporary people and issues.

History of Newsical the Musical

Newsical began as a cabaret production at Rose’s Turn Piano Bar and Cabaret in Greenwich Village in November 2002. The musical was created and directed by Collette Black with musical direction and arrangements by John McMahon. It won the 2003 Nightlife Award for Best Musical Revue.

Newsical moved off-off-Broadway in 2004, still with Black as director and McMahon as musical director. It ran for eight weeks at the John Houseman Studio in 2004.

In September 2004, Newsical began previews at New York City’s Upstairs at Studio 54. It was directed and choreographed by Donna Drake and was produced by Fred M. Caruso. Newsical was performed 215 times before closing in April 2005. The musical then began a national tour across the United States and an extended engagement at the Civic Center in Denver, Colorado later that year. It was nominated for Drama Desk Awards for Best Revue and Best Lyrics.

In 2009, the production was renamed Newsical the Musical: We Distort, You Decide. It had a new cast, director, and material. The production at the 47th Street Theatre closed in March 2010 and was nominated for 2010 Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Revue and Outstanding Lyrics.
