Motown: The Musical on Broadway  Tickets

Motown the Musical

Motown – The Musical opened on Broadway in 2013 featuring a talented cast performing many of the most famous hits of the era. The musical tells the story of the glory days of Motown and the many artists who became household names that have endured for generations.

The play features performances by many hit-makers, including the Four Tops, the Temptations, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross and the Supremes, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, Martha and the Vandellas, Mary Wells, and Michael Jackson. A team of gifted singers skillfully impersonate the voices and styles of these Detroit legends.

The story is told through the voice of Berry Gordy, the founder of Motown Records. He wrote the book for the musical, which was adapted from his autobiography that was published in 1994. The play is based on his memories of the era and the many artists he discovered.

The play opens in 1983, when Berry is trying to decide whether or not to participate in a television special about Motown. He has become angry about the decline of his record label and the loss of several artists he discovered and turned into stars.

The play then flashes back to a young Berry trying to choose a career. After several unsuccessful attempts in other fields, he decides to create a record company. The play includes over 50 well-known songs performed in shortened versions and tells the story of Motown’s success and Berry’s romance with Diana Ross.
