Kinky Boots features an energetic score written by Tony, Emmy, and Grammy winner Cyndi Lauper, a hilarious book written by Tony winner Harvey Fierstein, and Tony-winning direction and choreography by Jerry Mitchell. The play received 13 Tony nominations and won six awards in 2013, including Best Musical and Best Score for Lauper in her Broadway debut as a composer. She was the first woman to win alone in that category. The play, which premiered at the Al Hirschfeld Theater on Broadway in April 2013, features irresistible song and dance numbers and larger-than-life characters, making it a favorite of audiences and critics alike.
“The hottest musical on Broadway!” - The New York Times.
“The kicky crowd-pleaser 'Kinky Boots' is the very model of a modern major musical. [Cyndi] Lauper is a musical-theater natural, combining bright, infectious melodies with simple but effective lyrics. The overall effect is nigh irresistible.” - Adam Feldman, Time Out New York.
The play was inspired by the 2005 movie of the same name, which itself was inspired by a true story. It is set in a British factory during troubled times when jobs are at risk and people need to have their spirits lifted. The play explores the themes of finding one’s passion and overcoming prejudice and stereotypes. .
Charlie Price, played by Andy Kelso, is the heir to a struggling shoe factory in Northampton who longs to move to London with his fiancée, the status-conscious Nicola. When Charlie’s father dies, he needs to reinvent the business and himself. The factory is doing so poorly that he has to lay off 15 workers. Charlie, who is not interested in shoes, is guided by Lola, a drag performer played by Wayne Brady whom he meets by chance and who encourages him to market his boots to other cross-dressers. .
Lauper’s musical numbers embody her characteristic vulnerable misfit qualities that catapulted her to fame in the 1980s. The songs are both sentimental and eccentric. Under Jerry Mitchell’s direction, the actors define the characters by the way they sing and move. .
