The play tells the story of the birth of the United States and the experiences of Alexander Hamilton, an immigrant from the West Indies who supported George Washington during the Revolutionary War.

The book, music, and lyrics were written by Lin-Manuel Miranda. The play was inspired by the biography Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow. The score features songs from a variety of musical genres, including hip hop, rap, R&B, jazz, blues, and Broadway. The play was choreographed by Andy Blankenbuehler. Hamilton opened at the Public Theater in New York in 2015 and later transferred to Broadway.

Hamilton in Chicago will be directed by Thomas Kail. The Chicago cast will include Miguel Cervantes as Alexander Hamilton, Joshua Henry as Aaron Burr, Ari Asfar as Eliza Hamilton, and Chris Lee as Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson.

Hamilton will make its Chicago debut in the fall of 2016 at the PrivateBank Theatre. It will begin previews on September 27, and the official opening is scheduled for October 19. The play will be performed eight times a week.
