Chicago on Broadway Tickets

Chicago is the longest-running musical revival and the longest-running American musical in Broadway history. It debuted on Broadway in 1926. Chicago is the second-longest-running show in Broadway history, behind The Phantom of the Opera. It was the longest-running American musical in West End history, running for almost 15 years. Chicago has gone on tour around the world and was made into an Academy Award-winning film in 2002. It has won numerous Tony Awards, Drama Desk Awards, Olivier Awards, and a Grammy.

Chicago is filled with vaudeville musical numbers based on popular performers at the time. The music was written by John Kander, the lyrics were written by Fred Ebb, and the book was written by Ebb and Bob Fosse. Paige Davis as Roxie Hart, Amra Faye Wright as Velma Kelly, Jason Danieley as Billy Flynn, Raymond Bokhour as Amos Hart, and Natasha Yvette Williams as Matron “Mama” Morton all comprise the 2016 Broadway cast.

More Information about Chicago on Broadway

“As much tribute as revival, the spirit of Fosse's genius never leaves the stage, and Chicago, under Walter Bobbie's sharp direction, will dazzle newcomers to the trademark Fosse dance style and provide a thrilling reminder to those who've seen it before just how smart, sexy and exciting this brand of choreography was, or rather, is.” - Greg Evans, Variety

“The show seems to have discovered the fountain of youth. As entertaining as ever. Brash, buoyant and utterly irresistible!” - Michael Kuchwara, The Associated Press

The musical is based on a play by the same name written by Maurine Dallas Watkins, a reporter who covered the trials of accused murderers Beulah Annan and Belva Gaertner for the Chicago Tribune in 1924. The press and the public in Chicago became fascinated by a series of murders committed by women. In many high-profile cases, attractive women who were accused of killing their husbands and lovers were acquitted by all-male juries. It was widely believed that attractive women could not be convicted of murder in Chicago. Watkins’ columns about real-life trials were so popular that she decided to write a play based on them.

Annan became the basis for the character of Roxie Hart, who killed her lover, told her husband he was a burglar, and allowed him to take the blame. Velma Kelly is based on Gaertner. Kelly is a cabaret singer who killed her husband and sister after she found out they were having an affair. Two well-known lawyers formed the basis for a composite character, Billy Flynn, who represented many high-profile female murder defendants.
