Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Tickets

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, a musical based on the children’s book by Roald Dahl, will be coming to Broadway in 2017. The play tells the story of a young boy who is invited on a tour of Willy Wonka’s magical chocolate factory. It was adapted into films in 1971 and 2005. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will debut on Broadway on March 28, 2017 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre.

Changes to the West End Version

A musical version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has been running in the West End since 2013 and is scheduled to close in early 2017. Although it has been commercially successful, reviews from critics were mixed. The Broadway show will not be a transfer of the London production. The musical will undergo revisions before it makes its debut in New York.

The creative team will undergo several changes. Jack O’Brien will direct Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on Broadway and will replace Sam Mendes, who directed in London. Mendes will be on the producing team for the New York show. Joshua Bergasse will replace Peter Darling as choreographer. Mark Thompson will design the sets and costumes, and Japhy Weideman will do lighting design.

A new cast will be chosen for the Broadway production. It will star two-time Tony Award winner Christian Borle as Willy Wonka. The rest of the cast has not yet been announced.

The new Broadway version will more closely resemble the 1971 film starring Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka. It will include music from the film and music written for the London show. The new version on Broadway will still feature music written by Marc Shaiman and lyrics by Shaiman and Scott Wittman. The book will be written by David Greig.

The Broadway production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will be produced by Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures, Langley Park Productions, and Neal Street Productions. Warner Bros. is one of several film studios now producing projects for Broadway.
