Cagney Tickets

Cagney is a musical about Hollywood legend James Cagney that tells the story of how he rose from humble beginnings in New York to become a star of the silver screen. Cagney played a tough guy in movies such as Angels with Dirty Faces, Public Enemy, and White Heat. The musical follows him from the beginning of his career through his rise to become a movie star.

Cagney stars Robert Creighton, who co-wrote the lyrics with Christopher McGovern. The show is full of singing, tap dancing, and classic film references. Cagney is directed by Bill Castellino.

“Creighton handles it all with aplomb. Looking, sounding and dancing the part without ever stepping into caricature, he’s a dynamo in a star spangled vest.” – Stan Friedman, New York Theatre Guide

“The same superb acting-singing-dancing cast is back, and Robert Creighton, the sparkplug star in the title role, gives one of the most noteworthy performances on any current New York stage.” – Samuel L. Leiter, The Broadway Blog

More Information about Cagney the Musical

The story is told in a series of brief flashbacks. Cagney began his life in a struggling family in New York and worked hard to please his mother. He began a career as a vaudeville singer and dancer and fell in love with a woman named Billie, who would later become his wife. After he arrived in Hollywood, Cagney struggled to establish himself as a serious actor, fought to unionize, and battled allegations that he was a communist.

Jack Warner, a studio boss, gave Cagney roles in several films in the 1930s and made him famous but paid him little. Warner is portrayed as a villain by Bruce Sabath.

Cagney was originally performed at the York Theatre in 2015. The production was extended after its initial limited engagement sold out.
