Anastasia is a romantic mystery about a young girl who may or may not be a princess from the deposed Russian royal family. The story explores the power of myth, survival, identity, and home. The musical will begin previews on March 23, 2017 and will open on April 24 at the Broadhurst Theater on Broadway. It had its world premiere at Hartford Stage in May 2016.
Previous Versions of Anastasia
The new musical is inspired by the animated film that was released in 1997. Composers Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens wrote songs for the animated film Anastasia 20 years ago. The Broadway version will include several songs from the film and numerous new ones. The two songwriters, book writer Terrence McNally, and director Darko Tresnjak have all won Tony Awards for their previous work.
The new musical also draws inspiration from the 1956 live-action film that starred Ingrid Bergman and Yul Brynner. The film had a screenplay written by Arthur Laurents based on a play by Marcelle Maurette that was adapted by Guy Bolton.
Broadway Cast
Two relative newcomers will play the lead roles. Christy Altomare will star as Anya, the girl who is not sure if she is Princess Anastasia, and Derek Klena will play the role of Dmitry, a con man who wants to convince people that Anya is really the princess. Both performed in the Hartford Stage production and earned positive reviews for their performances. The cast will also include John Bolton and Caroline O’Connor.
