Something Rotten! on Broadway Tickets

To be, or not to be…funny—that is the question, and Something Rotten! answers with a definitive yes! If you’ve ever wanted to see Renaissance Theater performed as a modern musical comedy, you won’t want to miss Something Rotten! with music and lyrics by Wayne and Karey Kirkpatrick, and book by John O’Farrell. Something Rotten! premiered on April 22, 2015, and since then, has been the recipient of both a Drama Desk Award and a Tony Award. The show was also nominated for over 30 additional awards. The show was scheduled to start out in Seattle, but instead, it premiered on Broadway from the start.

Reviews for Something Rotten! on Broadway

“Sometimes it’s O.K. to go to the theater just to have fun. You’ll have plenty at Something Rotten!, the palmy, outrageous new lampoon of Hamlet that has hit Broadway like a ton of meringue in the face of cynicism. It’s the most hilarious romp since The Book of Mormon, only better.” – Rex Reed, Observer

“This is a big, brash meta-musical studiously fashioned in the mold of Monty Python's Spamalot, The Producers and The Book of Mormon, loaded with crowd-pleasing showstoppers, deliciously puerile gags and an infectious love of the form it so playfully skewers.” – David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter

Something Rotten! takes place in London in the year 1595, when two brothers—Nick and Nigel Bottom (fans of A Midsummer Night’s Dream will recognize Nick Bottom as the loveable fool)—attempt to grasp at success in the same time and place as The Bard himself. How can they hope to compete with none other than William Shakespeare? By producing a musical about a Danish pastry, called Omelet—to rival Shakespeare’s Hamlet about a Danish prince, that’s how. For the Bottom brothers, nothing can go wrong…or can it?

Something Rotten! has everything from references to modern musicals woven into lyrics of musical numbers like “Make an Omelet” in Act II, to disguises and mistaken identities—just like so many of Shakespeare’s plays. The directing team comes to Something Rotten! with credits for Aladdin and The Book of Mormon. With cheap tickets to Something Rotten!, you’re sure to have a side-splitting good time in New York’s Theater District.
