Cirque du Soleil - Paramour on Broadway Tickets
Cirque du Soleil, which translates to “Circus of the Sun” in English, burst onto the scene in 1984, founded by Guy Laliberte and Gilles Ste-Croix. The two had been street performers before launching the performance company. Cirque du Soleil stood out from other circus performances in many ways, including its exclusion of performing animals. By focusing on human acrobatics, costumes, and makeup, Cirque du Soleil has grown in popularity, and in April 2016, its show Paramour began in previews on Broadway. Paramour is the company’s first straight-to-Broadway production.
Cirque du Soleil Paramour is showing at the Lyric Theatre on West 43rd Street in Manhattan. The Lyric Theatre is the second largest Broadway theater, and seats almost two thousand patrons. The original theatre was built in 1903 and converted into a movie theater in 1934. It was condemned in the 1990s and demolished halfway through that decade to make room for the new venue, which underwent several name changes before becoming the Lyric Theatre in 2014. It is leased by the Ambassador Theatre Group, based out of the United Kingdom.
Cirque du Soleil announced their creation of Paramour in August of 2015, unique because unlike other Cirque du Soleil performances that have made it to Broadway, Paramour is beginning in a Broadway theater. The show centers around Hollywood’s Golden Age (a period of almost 30 years from 1930-1959). The story focuses on the life of a poet.
Paramour’s first six shows during previews brought in over $1 million dollars, placing it on the same level of revenue as shows such as School of Rock, The Book of Mormon, and Beautiful: The Carole King Musical for the week ending May 1, 2016. With an official open date of May 25, 2016, Paramour’s had an auspicious start.
