Les Miserables on Broadway Tickets

Les Miserables, based on the 1862 novel by famed author Victor Hugo (who also wrote The Hunchback of Notre Dame), is the longest-running musical in the world. In 2014, it began its third stint on Broadway, having first showed there at the Broadway Theatre, starting in March 1987. Les Miserables has won twenty-four awards, including: Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Score; the Laurence Olivier Award for Most Popular Show (twice); Drama Desk Awards; and the Helpmann Award for Best Musical. Les Miserables has been performed over 48,000 times in 44 countries and in 22 languages.

With so many revivals and tours under its belt, theatergoers might wonder what’s new with this production of the classic musical, Les Miserables. The answer: Quite a bit. Not only has the musical score received an update, but the staging and direction offer a fresh take on the presentation of the story as well. Set designer Matt Kinley abandoned the rotating platform for integration of a screen to relay images that provide both scope and setting. The images on the screen recall the vision of the 2012 film as well as inspiration from Hugo’s own drawings.

With music by Claude-Michel Schonberg (The Pirate Queen & Miss Saigon), and English lyrics adapted from the French by Herbert Kretzmer (winner of Best Original Song Golden Globe for “Suddenly”), this production of Les Miserables both honors those productions which came before and seeks to take new strides into the future.
