Cats was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber based on a 1939 collection of poems, Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, by poet T.S. Eliot. The musical tells the story of a tribe of cats gathering for the annual Jellicle Ball to celebrate and to decide which of them will get to go to the Heaviside Layer and be reborn. The cats take turns introducing themselves and explaining why they believe they should be chosen for the honor. Cats features the famous song “Memory.” Three-time Grammy nominee Leona Lewis will play the role of Grizabella in her Broadway debut. The new production of Cats will be directed by Trevor Nunn, who also directed the original. The musical will be choreographed by Andy Blankenbuehler, who choreographed the hip hop musical Hamilton. The new production will feature original sets and costumes that won Tony Awards.
The original production of Cats ran from 1982 to 2000 and was performed 7,485 times. It was the fourth-longest-running Broadway show in history. Cats has won seven Tony Awards, including one for best new musical in 1983. The play has been performed in 30 countries and translated into 15 languages. It has had successful limited-run productions in London for the past two holiday seasons.
